Personal experiences
I found out I had scoliosis when I was 13 after an X-ray showed my spine had curved enough to need treatment. Wearing a back brace for over a year has been hard and made me feel different from my peers, especially because I had to limit sports and constantly track brace hours. The discomfort and schedule restrictions were frustrating, but seeing my spine slowly straighten made the effort feel worth it. Knowing that surgery is no longer likely gives me hope. I’m excited to return to life without a brace.
I didn’t learn I had scoliosis until I was 24, when X-rays after a car accident revealed a 46 degree curve. Because I wasn’t treated as a child, I now manage it through exercise, stretching, massage, and core strengthening. Daily pain and changes in my appearance
have been difficult, and I sometimes feel sad, but I’ve also learned to accept this part of myself. Having a supportive doctor and knowing my overall health is good helps me cope. While my curve won’t go away, staying active makes me feel confident and strong.
I found out I had scoliosis at 12 during a doctor’s visit and now manage it with a brace and physical therapy. I don’t enjoy wearing the brace, especially at school where it can be distracting, and I had to temporarily stop playing violin. Even so, I understand that therapy is helping me get stronger and improve. My friends have been supportive, which makes a big difference. I’m still dealing with scoliosis, but it’s getting easier over
time.
